Julius Caesar, 2008-2014

was an artist-run exhibition space in Chicago’s East Garfield Park neighborhood co-founded in 2008 by Dana DeGiulio, Ezara Hoffman, Diego Leclery, Colby Shaft, Hans-Peter Sundquist, and Molly Zuckerman-Hartung. We were committed to showing local and under-represented artists in all media; we gave the artists full autonomy, didn’t take a cut, and paid the rent without institutional/grant help but with real jobs and the deep generosity and spirit of our community for all those years.

I worked subsequently with Chris Naka, Min Song, and Sean Ward, co-directing the space until 2014 when i moved to New York. The gallery was then handed over to a new set of artist-directors and operated continuously until 2022.

Here is an archive of the 67 shows from our 6 years of operation, and a link to many closing-day lectures. All of it is good and was done out of love.
