Dana DeGiulio @ The Suburban

The Suburban, Oak Park, IL. 13 Nov 2013 - January 2014

In 2013, The Suburban was an exhibition space near Chicago co-operated by artists Brad Killam and Michelle Grabner, professor at SAIC, co-curator of the 2014 Whitney Biennial, and my advisor in grad school. For this piece, I sold a silverpoint painting that Grabner gave to me as a gift to her gallery (James Cohan NYC) and used the money to purchase a 1999 Buick LeSabre. On the morning of the opening, without an audience and with The Suburban’s permission, I drove the car backwards into the gallery at 15mph, permanently destabilizing the structure and totaling the car. The vehicle was present for the duration of the exhibition.
